Democratic lawmakers led by Elizabeth Warren are demanding answers from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about Elon Musk's potential influence in suspending the Corporate Transparency Act. The group seeks communications showing how the Tesla CEO may have urged the Trump administration to halt the business accountability law requiring companies to disclose ownership information.

The 2021 law combats money laundering and terrorism by forcing businesses to report beneficial ownership. At the time of suspension, Musk served as a top Trump adviser leading cost-cutting efforts. The New York Times investigation revealed Musk operates 90 private companies in Texas that would have faced heightened disclosure requirements under the now-suspended law.

Lawmakers cite evidence suggesting Musk stood to benefit from the regulatory rollback, as his limited liability companies typically disclose minimal ownership details. The suspension occurred one day after Musk posted on X he could "look into it" regarding the law. The inquiry focuses on whether personal business interests influenced federal regulatory decisions.
