Four top Google AI researchers, including chief scientist Jeff Dean, are leaving to form a new startup called Discovery Loop. This move highlights shifts within Google's AI leadership and the continued venture capital interest in AI innovation.

Dr. Dean, an early Google employee instrumental in its search infrastructure and AI research, aims to develop AI capable of recursive self-improvement, accelerating scientific discovery. He is joined by long-time collaborators Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals. The startup has received seed funding from Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and other investors, with Alphabet, Google's parent company, also providing computing resources.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the departing researchers' significant contributions. The new company plans to operate as a public benefit corporation, prioritizing broad distribution of scientific discoveries. This departure follows a trend of prominent researchers leaving Google for AI startups, citing faster pace and less bureaucracy.
