Axel Springer Buys Telegraph for $766M in UK Media Shakeup

Axel Springer has agreed to acquire The Daily Telegraph for £575 million ($766 million), marking a major shift in British media ownership. The 170-year-old newspaper, known for its conservative stance and influence among Tory lawmakers, had been in limbo since 2023 when lenders seized the Barclay family's stake.

This deal follows a turbulent period that saw multiple failed attempts to sell the paper. A proposed sale to RedBird IMI, backed by Abu Dhabi interests, was blocked by new UK laws restricting foreign state ownership of newspapers. DMGT, owner of The Daily Mail, then entered talks but faced government scrutiny over potential market consolidation.

Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner called the acquisition "a privilege and a duty," pledging to maintain editorial independence while expanding The Telegraph's digital presence and U.S. market reach. The German publisher, which also owns Politico and Business Insider, aims to make The Telegraph "the leading center-right media outlet in the English-speaking world." The deal, subject to regulatory approval, represents Axel Springer's latest push into international expansion after failed attempts to buy the paper two decades ago.
