Tullow Extends Debt Maturities to 2028 in $1.35B Refinancing

Tullow Oil unveiled a comprehensive refinancing package that pushes its bond maturity from May 2026 to May 2028, providing crucial breathing room for the embattled oil producer. The deal maintains the 10.25% cash interest rate while adding up to 4.75% in payment-in-kind coupons and introducing a cash sweep mechanism that gives bondholders preferential claims on cash flows.

Stifel analyst Chris Wheaton estimates the refinancing will reduce Tullow's annual cash outflow by approximately $60 million through the conversion of interest payments to payment-in-kind. The company's Glencore facility has also been extended to May 2030 at a higher rate. With 66% of bondholders already agreeing to the terms, the deal requires 90% approval to proceed.

Despite the refinancing providing temporary relief, Tullow's fundamental debt challenge remains. The company reported 2025 revenue of $847 million with $100 million in free cash flow, while reducing net debt to $1.35 billion with $300 million in liquidity headroom. Wheaton maintains a Sell rating on the stock, noting the refinancing merely "pushes the debt problem to 2028" without addressing the underlying issue of excessive leverage.
