SCOTUS Trump Tariffs: IT Hardware Relief or Temporary Reprieve?

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down key Trump-era tariffs could provide only temporary relief for IT hardware and networking companies, according to Evercore ISI. The ruling invalidates several country-specific tariffs, including duties linked to "fentanyl" trade actions on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. Apple Inc, Dell Technologies Inc and HP Inc stand to benefit most from the near-term easing of trade pressures.

However, Evercore expects the reprieve to be limited as the administration has already invoked new tariffs under Section 122, including an immediate 10% global baseline duty. The firm notes that much of the sector's tariff exposure has already been mitigated, suggesting incremental benefits from the ruling may be modest. Section 232 tariffs remain in place and continue to target certain semiconductor and derivative products.

The decision does not affect ongoing Section 301 investigations that could justify longer-term measures. Evercore added that refunds tied to previously paid tariffs are unlikely to provide a near-term catalyst, noting that any repayment process through the Court of International Trade could take years to resolve. The firm maintains that the tariff outlook remains fluid and will continue to monitor developments as policy evolves.
