OpenAI NATO Contract: Pentagon Deal Sparks Backlash

OpenAI is pursuing a new contract with NATO to deploy its AI technology on the alliance's unclassified networks, according to multiple media reports. This follows the company's controversial deal with the U.S. Defense Department to integrate AI into the Pentagon's classified systems.

The Pentagon contract came after a major falling out with rival Anthropic, which was removed from a defense contract after refusing to allow its AI models to be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. Anthropic was also designated a 'supply-chain risk' by Washington, creating an opening for OpenAI.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman defended the Pentagon partnership but acknowledged it appeared 'opportunistic' when announced. The deal triggered significant backlash, with ChatGPT mobile app uninstalls surging 295% day-over-day on Saturday. Anthropic's Claude has since overtaken ChatGPT as the top app on Apple's App Store, suggesting potential market share shifts in the competitive AI landscape.
