Nasdaq 100 Bets Slashed as Asset Managers Hedge AI Disruption

Asset managers are rapidly unwinding their exposure to Nasdaq 100 futures as concerns about artificial intelligence disruption intensify across Wall Street. Recent CFTC data shows net-long positioning in Nasdaq 100 futures has declined by more than $7 billion since mid-January, marking the largest reduction since last spring, according to Bloomberg-compiled figures.

This shift reflects both increased short positions, up roughly $3 billion, and trimmed long positions as investors reassess which business models will benefit from AI and which could face structural impairment. The repositioning comes as AI disruption dominates market conversations, with investors rotating capital toward structural and cyclical beneficiaries while pressuring areas more exposed to long-dated cash flows.

Morgan Stanley strategists led by Michael Wilson describe the recent volatility as "typical of a major investment cycle," noting that some AI-related fears appear contradictory. While the team views AI as "highly disruptive" and strengthening the investment case for infrastructure and compute enablers, they acknowledge that faster-than-expected acceleration in AI model capabilities poses risks to their base case, potentially amplifying disruption and reshaping sector leadership more quickly than anticipated.
