Danone Shares Tumble on Infant Formula Recall

Danone shares dropped 5.8% in Paris after the French food giant recalled a limited number of infant formula batches across Europe. The recall was triggered after food-safety authorities, including Ireland's Food Safety Authority, flagged a potential contamination issue linked to an ingredient from China.

The contaminated ingredient, ARA oil, was found to contain cereulide, a toxin. This follows similar withdrawals by Nestlé, Lactalis, and Hochdorf, highlighting a wider supply chain problem. Kepler Cheuvreux analyst Jon Cox noted the widespread publicity could weigh on impacted brands, with infant formula representing about a third of Danone's operating profit.

Danone stated its internal checks showed no safety breach and that products for its largest market, China, were unaffected. The company is withdrawing batches to comply with updated guidance from some regulators. Investors will now watch for further regulatory updates and the potential financial impact on Danone's crucial baby nutrition division.
