Apple Expands John Ternus Role Amid Succession Talk

Apple has quietly expanded hardware chief John Ternus's responsibilities to include oversight of the company's design teams, according to a Bloomberg report. This move positions him as a more direct successor to Tim Cook, who reportedly appointed Ternus to the role late last year. The change gives Ternus executive sponsorship over all design functions at the iPhone maker.

Design has been a cornerstone of Apple's success since the Steve Jobs era, encompassing both hardware and software. The role was previously held by legendary designer Jony Ive until 2019, and more recently by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, who retired at the end of 2025. Ternus now bridges the design organization with Apple's executive leadership.

Despite this leadership shift, there are no signs Cook plans to step down soon. The 65-year-old CEO, who has led Apple since 2011, is expected to eventually remain as chairman when he does retire. Ternus's expanded role signals a long-term succession plan, ensuring continuity for one of Apple's most critical functions.
