Anthropic's Claude Code Not Cyber Threat, Says Bernstein

Bernstein analysts dismissed concerns that Anthropic's Claude Code Security poses an existential threat to the cybersecurity sector, calling last week's stock selloff overdone. The firm noted that the product targets a narrow code security niche, competing with vendors like Snyk, SonarSource, Checkmarx, and Veracode.

Following Anthropic's Friday announcement, cybersecurity stocks including Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, and Zscaler experienced sharp declines despite no direct capability overlap with the new offering. Bernstein emphasized that Claude Code Security focuses on scanning codebases for vulnerabilities and ensuring secure code hygiene in cloud-based development environments.

The analysts stressed there is no natural linkage between code security and broader cybersecurity categories such as endpoint, network security, or identity protection. They noted that more than 80% of cyber intrusions stem from human-related issues like stolen credentials or compromised passwords, rather than insecure code. Operational misconfigurations and patching gaps account for most remaining incidents.

Bernstein also downplayed concerns about OpenAI's Trusted Access for Cyber beta, noting that infrastructure platforms have historically struggled to displace independent cybersecurity vendors. The firm maintained its investment recommendations, stating that the market reaction does not reflect a fundamental shift in the cybersecurity landscape.
