AI App Sparks Broker Stock Selloff

Insurance broker stocks tumbled Monday as AI disruption fears spread. AON, WTW, BRO and AJG fell between 6.93% and 12.10% after reports OpenAI approved an insurance app from Spanish firm Tuio for its ChatGPT platform. The development raised concerns about traditional intermediaries being bypassed by new technology.

The AI app enables personalized home insurance quotes and direct policy purchases through natural conversation, eliminating traditional friction points. However, Wolfe Research analysts called the selloff "overblown," noting the app focuses on personal lines while the affected brokers specialize in commercial lines, which lack infrastructure for direct-to-business models.

Analysts point out these broker stocks already trade at depressed multiples as investors worry about their role in an industry described as "human capital intensive" and an "expensive intermediary on the value chain." Wolfe maintains a cautious stance on how much AI can actually disintermediate these established insurance distribution networks.
