Zhang Lei's Desert AI Data Centers

Chinese cleantech billionaire Zhang Lei is proposing a radical solution to the burgeoning energy demands of the AI boom: building data centers in deserts powered by dedicated renewable microgrids. This approach challenges the current model where tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon rely on strained power grids and supplement with fossil fuels, a strategy Zhang deems "bullshitting" and irresponsible.

Zhang's company, Envision, which ranks among the world's top wind turbine producers, has launched "Mission Gobi" to develop these off-grid facilities. Envision has already established a pilot AI data center in Inner Mongolia, co-developed with Tencent, powered entirely by direct renewable energy. The company plans to build 5GW of such data centers by 2030, aiming to provide reliable and cost-effective power without burdening existing grids or increasing carbon emissions.

This strategy directly confronts the energy consumption issue, which has seen Microsoft's emissions rise significantly. While Zhang's plan involves technological advancements in cooling systems to mitigate water usage, the significant investment in battery storage and renewable generation to ensure near-100% reliability remains a hurdle. However, it aligns with China's push for AI infrastructure in remote, renewable-rich areas, potentially creating a new market for specialized data center infrastructure and green energy solutions.
