UK Shifts to US Jet Fuel Amid Gulf Crisis

Britain has emerged as the leading destination for US jet fuel exports, with a quarter of American shipments heading to the UK this month. This dramatic shift reflects the aviation sector's scramble to replace supplies from the Gulf, where deliveries have slowed since the start of the Iran conflict. The UK historically relied heavily on Middle Eastern imports, but now receives significantly more fuel from the United States.

US exports to the UK have surged to approximately 500,000 tonnes in March, double February's volume. American-sourced fuel is expected to account for half of the UK's imports in early April, compared to just 7% in 2025. Europe faces a bidding war with Asia for jet fuel supplies, with European prices trading $38 a barrel higher than US benchmarks, compared to just $0.50 before the conflict.

The UK's energy security remains precarious due to limited storage capacity and minimal domestic refining. Current inventories cover only about 30 days of demand, compared to over 50 days in France and Germany. Despite increased US exports, analysts estimate these shipments will replace only half of the UK's lost Middle Eastern supplies.
