Turkey’s Yıldırımhan ICBM Claimed 6,000‑km Range Sparks Doubt

Turkey rolled out the Yıldırımhan intercontinental ballistic missile at a defence expo in Istanbul, claiming a 6,000‑km range and a 3‑tonne warhead. The launch drew headlines when an AI‑generated video showed the missile targeting U.S. sites, a claim far beyond the official range and the current prototype status for Turkey's defence industry to scrutinise claims.

Defence Minister Yaşar Güler insisted the system is only for deterrence, yet the video sparked doubts. Industry analysts note that Turkey's longest‑range missile, the Tayfun, has tested only 600 km, a tenth of Yıldırımhan's stated reach. The Ministry said laboratory tests passed but full field trials remain pending for future deployment analysis and investment decisions.

Turkey's defence exports rank eleventh globally, supplying Europe with drones, warships, and munitions. The Yıldırımhan display comes ahead of a NATO leaders' summit in Ankara, where allies assess Turkey's strategic assets. Analysts warn that overstating capabilities could strain diplomatic ties and inflate defence budgets for regional security calibration and budget allocation decisions by military planners.

The Yıldırımhan's exaggerated range and pending prototype status underline a broader trend of ambitious Turkish missile projects that outpace current technical achievements. Investors watching the defence sector should track progress of field trials and diplomatic reactions, as credibility gaps can affect export licenses and market confidence for longer term investments and policy alignment and oversight.
