The Story of Money is a new podcast from The Financial Times exploring the past to see where the next opportunities — and disasters — may lie. Hosted by FT columnist Gillian Tett and FT Alphaville editor Robin Wigglesworth, the series traces how financial systems evolve and why familiar patterns often repeat, offering context for everything from market cycles to emerging AI trends.

Episodes cover unregulated frontier banking in 19th‑century America, institutionalised debt forgiveness in ancient Mesopotamia, the $100mn profit of a trader in the 1929 Wall Street crash, the Nixon Shock that cut the dollar from gold, and the South Sea Bubble that birthed modern financial crashes. New episodes drop weekly on Wednesdays from 22 April.

Gillian Tett is a columnist, editorial board member and Provost of King’s College, Cambridge, with multiple British Press Awards. Robin Wigglesworth edits Alphaville, authored *Trillions* and *A Fabulous Debt*, and previously covered global finance for the FT and Bloomberg.

The podcast is free on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other platforms, joining the FT’s network that includes FT News Briefing, Unhedged and Tech Tonic.
