Tencent advances development of an AI agent for WeChat, China's ubiquitous platform with 1.4 billion users. The tech giant is testing a prototype designed to help users complete tasks within the app, with plans to begin the compliance process this month. Tencent shares jumped 6% in Hong Kong following the report, reflecting market enthusiasm for this strategic initiative.

Users will access the AI agent by swiping right on the main WeChat screen, enabling it to tap into millions of mini-apps for tasks like finding cafes and ordering drinks. This move could help Tencent surpass domestic rivals Alibaba and ByteDance, which have already implemented AI agents across their platforms, despite having smaller user bases than WeChat's massive reach.

The project faces significant challenges, including computing power constraints due to the US export ban on Nvidia chips. Tencent was reportedly too conservative in stockpiling these chips before the restrictions. Early estimates suggest the full rollout will be very costly, raising questions about near-term revenue potential despite the strategic importance of maintaining WeChat's dominance in China's digital ecosystem.
