Proposals to move data centers into orbit as a solution for AI's growing energy demands face significant technical challenges that could worsen satellite congestion and impact astronomical observations. The concept, while innovative, encounters fundamental obstacles that make it impractical for near-term implementation.

Satellite congestion is already a growing concern as low Earth orbit becomes increasingly crowded with commercial and government satellites. Adding large data center infrastructure would accelerate this problem, potentially creating dangerous collision risks and making certain orbital paths unusable. The physical constraints of launching and maintaining such massive structures in space present engineering challenges far beyond current capabilities.

Beyond the technical hurdles, placing data centers in orbit would introduce new environmental concerns. The increased satellite traffic would contribute to light pollution, degrading the night sky for both amateur stargazers and professional astronomers. The energy requirements for cooling and powering these facilities in space, combined with the carbon footprint of frequent rocket launches needed for construction and maintenance, could actually increase rather than decrease the environmental impact compared to terrestrial solutions.
