A Russian warship allegedly fired warning shots at a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday. The incident occurred about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight. The Admiral Grigorovich fired the shots at a distance of 500 yards after the motorless yacht drifted close during foggy weather.

This confrontation follows a British crackdown on Russia's shadow fleet, which consists of more than 700 oil tankers. Just days earlier, British forces intercepted the Smyrtos oil tanker. While the UK Ministry of Defence views this as an isolated event, the Russian vessel has spent months escorting shadow fleet ships near the UK coast.

Royal Navy vessels HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne monitored the situation and checked on the yacht's passengers. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called the event a reminder that the government must accelerate its defense investment plan. Russia previously stated it would take measures to protect national interests in international waters.

No injuries or damage resulted from the gunfire. The UK Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the reports while the Kremlin has not responded to requests for comment.
