Rome’s largest international airport, Fiumicino, is accelerating its €9bn expansion plan to finish before the 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s death in 2033. The city expects a surge in Vatican visitors during the landmark jubilee, so the airport wants to be ready in time.

The privately funded scheme adds a fourth runway, a new terminal complex and extra facilities, targeting 100mn annual passengers by 2046. CEO Marco Troncone is urging Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to approve construction within two years, saying the runway could be ready in 2033.

Growth is expected even without the Messianic milestone. US tourists have risen 50% over 2019, and Asian markets are expanding. Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native, may draw more Catholic visitors. Local residents, normally opposed to such projects, are reportedly in favour.
