Regenerative farming surges in UK after record heatwave

UK growers are rapidly adopting regenerative methods as July’s heatwave exposed the fragility of conventional practices. Cutting pesticides, diversifying crops and planting shade trees help soil retain moisture and protect livestock. A Barclays study found over half of surveyed farmers now use regenerative techniques, with 6.7% annual input‑cost growth driving the shift.

Veteran advocates say early adopters are better positioned for climate stress. Martin Lines, chief executive of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, noted that farms that embraced the approach a decade ago show greater resilience. Consultants warn that short‑term fixes are limited, urging changes to feeding schedules and livestock handling to mitigate midday heat.

Government support schemes, revamped by the Labour administration, now broaden access to subsidies for smaller holdings. These funds, combined with market pressure to reduce chemicals, are accelerating the transition. With the upcoming arable harvest projected to improve on last year’s poor yields, the sector appears poised for a more sustainable, water‑wise future.
