Qatar urges US-Iran hotline to keep Hormuz open

Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, told reporters the Gulf state will re‑activate its LNG output within weeks after a recent production dip. He linked the move to the restoration of the US‑Iran hotline, saying reliable communication between Washington and Tehran is essential for regional stability, global energy trade and oil market confidence.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which about a third of global oil passes, has seen periodic closures tied to geopolitical tension. By urging both superpowers to keep dialogue open, Qatar hopes to avert disruptions that could spike crude prices. Analysts note that even a brief shutdown can lift Brent by several dollars, tightening profit margins for refiners in the volatile Middle East.

Qatar’s call underscores its role as a gas‑rich intermediary seeking to balance diplomatic and commercial interests. With LNG contracts worth billions on the line, the nation cannot afford supply gaps that might erode its market share in Europe and Asia. The prime minister’s message signals that maintaining the US‑Iran hotline is now as much a commercial imperative as a security one for its long‑term energy strategy.
