OpenAI Expands AWS Partnership After Microsoft Deal

OpenAI will expand its AI model distribution to Amazon's cloud customers through AWS Bedrock, following renegotiated exclusivity terms with Microsoft. The ChatGPT maker will bring its most advanced models and Codex coding agent to AWS after Amazon committed to investing up to $50 billion in OpenAI earlier this year.

Microsoft concluded a deal allowing OpenAI to make models available on rival platforms in exchange for better revenue sharing terms. The removal of a contentious "AGI clause" enables OpenAI's broader distribution strategy. This move follows customer demand for deploying OpenAI's frontier models in trusted environments as businesses adopt agentic AI tools.

Amazon, also an $8 billion investor in Anthropic, has signed deals to procure $138 billion in data centre capacity from OpenAI. AWS customers will soon access OpenAI's latest 5.5 model through Amazon's Bedrock service, which already includes models from Anthropic, Meta and Mistral. The expanded partnerships signal a more competitive cloud AI market as companies seek to diversify their AI infrastructure providers.
