Amazon has finalized its $50bn investment in OpenAI, securing an approximate 5 percent stake in the ChatGPT maker. Initially, Amazon committed $15bn in February, with an additional $35bn contingent on milestones like a public offering or AI breakthroughs.

The full investment has now been deployed, providing crucial funding to the AI company. This deepens the companies' ties beyond commercial agreements for chips and cloud services, strengthening OpenAI's capacity to develop new AI models amidst intense competition.

The final tranche was received this week, establishing Amazon's stake. This move followed OpenAI's renegotiation of its contract with Microsoft in April, allowing other cloud providers like AWS to serve OpenAI. Amazon also supports rival Anthropic and aims to make both AI labs' models available to its cloud customers.
