Proposals to replace the AI Security Institute with a more powerful regulator will be voted on at Labour conference this month. The motion, put forward by the Communication Workers Union, comes as concerns mount in Westminster about AI's rapid transformation of society. Louise Haigh, first secretary of state, told the Trades Union Congress that AI poses "huge risks" to national security without proper protections. A senior minister said AI is increasingly dominating weekly cabinet meetings in Downing Street, predicting it will be "the biggest issue in almost every area" within a year. Mike Clancy, general secretary of the Prospect trade union representing 157,000 professionals, said every government meeting now discusses AI.

The government aims to make the UK a positive space for AI development while avoiding a jobless future. John Chadfield, CWU national officer, called the Aisi under-resourced and toothless, noting it is completely opt-in for large companies. Liam Byrne, Labour chair of the House of Commons business committee, demanded Aisi chief Henry de Zoete give evidence to MPs over concerns about "the adequacy of current AI safety governance.".
