KPMG has appointed Gary Wingrove as its next global chief executive, selecting the former Australia boss over UK head Jon Holt in a closely watched leadership contest. The Big Four accounting firm's global board recommended Wingrove after an anonymous vote during a February meeting, with the decision pending ratification by the global council this month.

Wingrove, currently KPMG's global chief operating officer of the $40 billion revenue operation, has been an architect of the firm's strategy to consolidate its national member firms. The 276,000-person firm is structured as a network of locally owned partnerships, and Wingrove has pushed for closer integration and multibillion-dollar investments in technology and AI. Under his leadership in Australia, the firm saw revenue, profits, and headcount nearly double.

Holt, who had been viewed as an early favorite, campaigned on a promise of transformation after repairing KPMG UK's reputation from audit failures. The decision represents a victory for continuity over change, with Wingrove seen as the more operational candidate. Current CEO Bill Thomas's term runs until September 30, and the succession process will conclude when the Global Council meets in March.
