Kenya Blocks US Ebola Facility

A Kenyan court has suspended the opening of a 50-bed Ebola quarantine facility planned for Laikipia Air Base, following protests from activists and medical groups. The facility was intended for Americans potentially exposed to the Bundibugyo virus spreading in neighboring DR Congo and Uganda. The court ruling blocks any transfers to the site after activists claimed Kenya was being used as a "containment colony."

The US had pledged $13.5 million for Kenya's Ebola preparedness while establishing the facility exclusively for American healthcare workers. Washington's decision to treat citizens abroad rather than repatriate them represents a shift from previous Ebola outbreak protocols. Kenya's medical unions threatened industrial action, criticizing the apartheid-style healthcare model planned for the facility.

The legal setback comes as the US imposes travel restrictions on people visiting Ebola-affected nations, despite WHO recommendations against such measures. Washington has temporarily banned entry of non-citizens who have visited DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan. The court ruling forces the US to reconsider its Ebola containment strategy in Africa, potentially delaying critical response measures.
