JBS Scraps Net Zero Climate Goal

JBS, the world's largest meat supplier, has abandoned a net zero target that included emissions from its vast supply chain, a move criticized by environmental groups. The Brazilian company cited the difficulty in controlling indirect, or Scope 3, emissions, which originate primarily from the livestock it purchases from thousands of farmers.

Instead, JBS will concentrate on reducing emissions within its direct operations (Scope 1 and 2), which account for a small fraction of its total greenhouse gas output. The company aims to cut emissions intensity from its core operations by 30% by 2030 and by 70% by 2050, while also focusing on agricultural productivity improvements.

Environmental campaigners like Greenpeace labeled the decision "reckless," particularly given that livestock contributes significantly to global methane emissions. JBS faced prior scrutiny and legal action, including a $1.1 million settlement over misleading green marketing claims, highlighting investor concerns over corporate environmental accountability.
