India’s sweltering nights are pushing electricity demand to new highs, as people install air‑conditioning units to escape the heat that can reach 30 °C under the sky. The International Energy Agency says night‑time temperatures rise twice as fast as daytime ones, and that night‑time demand has climbed 40 % to 252 GW since 2019. ACs now account for up to a third of that load. While the country’s solar farms – thanks to investments from Tata and Adani – provide about 9 % of daytime power, the lack of storage means coal plants must fill the gap after sunset. Experts say thermal generation supplied nearly 80 % of night demand in May and June, and that battery capacity needs to grow 27‑fold by 2032. The rise in AC ownership – Voltas sold 1 million units in the first quarter of the fiscal year – is turning cooling from a luxury into a necessity for a 1.4 bn‑strong population. The government’s goal of net‑zero by 2070 will hinge on expanding renewable output and storage to meet this new peak.

This shift is already reshaping grid management, with utilities curtailing 18 % of solar output when storage is insufficient. The central authority estimates that India will need to increase its battery storage by more than 27 times to about 236 GWh by 2031‑2032. Despite these challenges, officials say electricity availability remains “sufficient”, but the growing AC market demands a faster transition to renewable and storage solutions.

The heat island effect in cities, where tall buildings trap warm air and fewer trees reduce cooling, further amplifies night‑time temperatures. As climate change accelerates, the pattern is likely to persist, making the battle against heat and power scarcity a pressing issue for policymakers and consumers alike börjar.
