Several prominent US hedge funds, including Point72 and Citadel, have been targeted in a recent wave of cyber attacks, raising concerns about vulnerabilities in their software systems. These firms, which manage tens of billions of dollars and handle sensitive trading information, are prime targets for cyber criminals.

Reports indicate that the attacks involved audio "phishing" attempts, where perpetrators impersonate trusted individuals via phone calls to extract private information. Millennium Management was also reportedly targeted. While Point72 is investigating a potential breach and has engaged law enforcement and cybersecurity experts, Citadel reportedly did not appear to be breached.

These incidents occur amid broader concerns about the increasing sophistication of cyber attacks, partly fueled by advancements in AI tools. Such technologies can empower malicious actors to develop new hacking capabilities, intensifying a cyber arms race. A similar series of attacks at law firms and financial institutions, using voice phishing to mimic IT employees, was detailed in a recent Google report. Wall Street firms have been investing heavily in cybersecurity to counter these escalating threats.
