Greece Blocks EU Sanctions Over Shipping Firm

Greece is opposing a new EU sanctions package against Russia, specifically targeting the transport of Russian LNG to third countries. Athens' ambassador to the EU argued that the proposed ban would "ruin" Dynagas, a shipping company owned by Greek tycoon George Prokopiou. Dynagas specializes in transporting Russian LNG from an Arctic plant and operates a significant portion of specialized Arc7 tankers.

This objection has delayed the approval of the EU's 21st sanctions package for a week, impacting measures against banks, crypto networks, and military companies. The delay also affects a mechanism to adjust the price cap on Russian crude oil. Ambassadors agreed to a week-long extension of the current price cap to allow for further negotiations and to assess the economic and technical implications, including the LNG transport ban.

Other EU diplomats emphasize the need for all member states to impose economic pain on Moscow, noting that many companies have already suffered losses. Kaja Kallas, the EU's chief diplomat, expressed regret over the lack of agreement. Prokopiou's companies, Dynagas and Dynacom, have profited significantly from trading Russian crude and LNG, with Dynagas transporting over 10 million tonnes of Russian LNG since early 2025.
