Gibson Dunn is in talks to hire as many as 120 lawyers from Weil Gotshal & Manges in the US and London, in one of the biggest lateral moves ever in the legal industry. More than 20 partners are among the group planning to move, including leaders of Weil's private funds groups in the US and UK, after the New York firm announced last week that it was planning to dissolve, according to people familiar with the matter.
The team includes Weil's head of private funds in New York, Andrew Chizzik, and the co-heads of Weil's London private funds group, James Bromley and James Sargent, the people said. The lawyers span fund structuring, regulation, tax and finance.
Weil is expected to close its doors in the coming months after dozens of top partners left the New York powerhouse unable to survive as a viable business. Partners will vote in the coming days to formally wind down the firm, which has 1,200 lawyers and $2bn in annual revenue.
Gibson Dunn declined to comment. Weil did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
