Gas Tanker Hit in Strait of Hormuz

A Qatari LNG tanker, identified as the Al Rekayyat, caught fire after an unknown projectile struck it in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident, near Oman's coast, occurred during ongoing peace talks between the US and Iran, testing diplomatic efforts over the vital waterway.

Reports suggest a Saudi crude oil tanker may have also been hit. A US official cited by Axios claimed Iran fired missiles at commercial ships. This strike follows a recent memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at reopening the strait, which previously handled a fifth of global oil and gas.

The attack has disrupted shipping traffic. Another Qatari LNG tanker, the Al Areesh, diverted course. Pakistan, which relies heavily on Qatari LNG and has led back-channel talks, faces increased energy costs. The nation is seeking assurances for its LNG supplies to pass safely through the strait, a route that has seen reduced traffic despite an initial uptick after the recent agreement.
