BP Chairman O Sparks Governance Controversy

BP's former chairman Albert Manifold rejected what he called "lies" about his abrupt dismissal, admitting he "pushed hard" but never crossed ethical lines. The ousted executive denied misconduct allegations, claiming he merely challenged colleagues while trying to improve strategic direction. Manifold served less than a year as chair before being removed over governance concerns.

The energy giant cited "serious concerns" about conduct issues in removing Manifold, who previously led CRH. He described his management style as focused on cost-cutting and operational simplification, noting he spent only 13 days at BP's London headquarters. Despite executive turmoil, BP has revived its performance by refocusing on oil and gas, doubling quarterly profits to more than $3 billion.

Manifold called BP executives "among the finest people I have worked with" despite his ouster. BP named Ian Tyler as interim chair to replace him. The leadership shakeup follows years of investor discontent over strategy, including an ill-fated 2022 renewable energy pivot that sent shares downward. The company has since reversed course, with shares up nearly 20% this year.
