One passenger died and 89 people were injured when two East Midlands Railway services collided on the Midland main line near Bedford at about 5.15 pm on Friday. The 16:40 Corby‑London commuter train struck the rear of the 15:50 Nottingham‑London service, compressing the Corby train’s cab but leaving both units largely upright.

British Transport Police labeled the scene a major incident; the East of England Ambulance Service reported 11 very seriously injured, 22 seriously injured and 56 with minor wounds. The National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers said on‑board staff and passengers sustained broken bones, and Health Secretary James Murray posted a brief acknowledgement on X.

Both trains belong to East Midlands Railway, a Transport UK subsidiary, and the collision shut the Midland corridor linking London, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield, also disrupting Thameslink services to Luton and Bedford. It is the first fatal UK passenger‑train crash since the 2024 Talerddig incident, reviving scrutiny of safety controls on lower‑risk track sections.
