EU to Share Jet Fuel as Mideast Crisis Threatens Flights

The European Commission is preparing to mandate jet fuel sharing across the EU as supplies dwindle, threatening summer travel with higher prices and cancellations. Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned that Europe faces a critical supply shortage, with six weeks of jet fuel remaining according to the International Energy Agency.

European airlines including Lufthansa and KLM have already begun canceling flights due to fuel shortages. The crisis stems from disrupted Middle East supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, which provides a disproportionate share of Europe's kerosene. Jørgensen said the situation has shifted from high prices to actual supply constraints, requiring immediate action.

The Commission plans to implement measures including a fuel observatory to monitor supplies, redistribution protocols across member states, and potential strategic stock releases. While pandemic-era vaccine sharing faced political challenges, Jørgensen expressed confidence in EU solidarity. The proposals aim to prevent regional disparities in fuel access and ensure airports and airlines can maintain operations through the summer travel season.
