EU to fine Google under Digital Markets Act

The European Commission will announce several decisions against Google next week, imposing fines of hundreds of millions of euros and threatening daily penalty payments under the Digital Markets Act. The actions stem from two investigations: one finding that Google favors its own shopping, travel and other services in search results, and another requiring the Play Store to let developers direct users to alternative app stores.

Under the DMA, penalties can reach 10 % of global turnover; Alphabet reported $402.83bn revenue last year. The Commission also warned that non‑compliance “should be considered as serious,” and Google could face periodic payments if it fails to comply within 60 days. Previous EU fines on Apple (€500mn) and Meta (€200mn) and over €8bn in earlier antitrust penalties set a precedent.

The move comes as EU‑US tensions over digital rules ease; former President Donald Trump had called the fines a “form of taxation.” Brussels will also decide on data‑access requirements for third‑party search engines and AI providers, pressured by lawmakers and civil‑society groups seeking greater tech sovereignty.
