EU Forces Rail Giants to Open Platforms

The EU will mandate train operators to display rival services on their platforms, forcing SNCF, Renfe, and Deutsche Bahn to open their online ticketing systems to competitors. European commissioner Raffaele Fitto calls the proposals a "game changer" aiming to give passengers the seamless booking experience of air travel. Passengers could soon combine tickets from multiple operators and transport modes into a single purchase.

Market consolidation faces disruption as the measure targets operators controlling 50%+ market share in national railway services. Private companies like Kevinspeed, Velvet, and European Sleeper could gain competitive advantages. Booking platform Omio supports the changes but warns against data access limitations that might entrench national concentration.

Analysts warn implementation challenges remain, particularly regarding advance booking windows and technical integration of disparate systems. Studies indicate a third of citizens avoid complex multi-operator journeys due to booking difficulties. The EU regulation could fundamentally reshape Europe's rail market landscape within the next 12-18 months.
