Delivery Hero CEO Östberg to Step Down Amid Activist Pressure

Delivery Hero founder Niklas Östberg will step down as CEO by March next year, after a supervisory board search for a successor began. The Berlin‑based group, listed in Frankfurt with a €7.4 bn market cap, said Östberg will stay on through the transition. He cited the company’s strategic review launched in December as the right moment to hand over the reins.

Share prices have slumped roughly 80 % over five years, sparking activist pressure. Hong Kong‑based hedge fund Aspex Management, now holding about 15 % after buying 5 % from Prosus for €335 m, urged a leadership change and regional exits. Its stake makes it the second‑largest shareholder, positioning it to influence the June annual meeting.

Delivery Hero’s portfolio spans more than 60 countries under brands like Glovo, Talabat and Foodpanda. The December review included selling its Taiwan unit to Grab for $600 m, a move aimed at tightening the group’s focus. Investors view the CEO transition as a chance to curb complexity and revive a stock that has lost 80 % of its value.

Prosus, Delivery Hero’s largest shareholder, has been trimming its stake to meet EU antitrust rules after the Just Eat takeover, selling 4.5 % to Uber for €270 m. The company’s share price rose 1 % on the announcement, signalling investor relief. With a new CEO on the horizon, the firm aims to streamline operations and restore investor confidence.
