Scientists at Stanford University have utilized artificial intelligence to design and synthesize novel viruses, a breakthrough in synthetic biology. Their generative AI program, Evo 2, created 16 synthetic phages, which are viruses that infect bacteria. These AI-designed phages proved more effective at killing E. coli than natural counterparts in lab tests.

This development, published in the journal Science, is hailed as a "proof of concept" for generative AI in creating functional genomes. Researchers believe this technology could lead to advances in healthcare, particularly in reviving phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics, given the rise of resistant pathogens. The AI tool, Evo 2, is open source, intended for broad beneficial use.

However, the creation of synthetic viruses also raises significant biosafety and biosecurity concerns. Experts warn that existing governance frameworks are insufficient to oversee generative genomics. While the initial study used non-pathogenic strains, the technology could potentially be extended to design entirely new organisms, necessitating careful consideration of potential misuse.
