Frans Muller, who steered Ahold Delhaize into one of Europe’s biggest supermarket chains, will step down at the group’s April AGM. His successor, Thierry Garnier, currently CEO of the DIY giant Kingfisher, will take the helm. Garnier brings seven years at Kingfisher, where he oversaw brands such as B&Q, Screwfix and Castorama across Europe today in 2024.

Muller’s tenure anchored the 2016 merger of Dutch Ahold and Belgian Delhaize, building a €34bn market‑capitalised retailer that rivals Tesco. Under his guidance, the group expanded into the U.S., where it now generates roughly 60% of sales. Ahold also reported stronger‑than‑expected Q1 margins, buoyed by mild weather and falling U.S. egg prices in 2024 year.

Garnier, a former Carrefour executive, is praised for his digital transformation acumen and international reach. Kingfisher confirmed he will stay during his 12‑month notice period, with a succession search underway. Meanwhile, Claude Sarrailh, Ahold’s Europe and Indonesia CEO, will move to Italian chain Esselunga, strengthening its leadership bench in 2024 season for growth focus.

The leadership shift signals Ahold’s intent to blend grocery expertise with DIY retail insights, potentially reshaping product assortments and customer experience. Investors will scrutinize how Garnier’s experience translates into cost efficiencies and digital gains. Ahold’s €34bn valuation and U.S. expansion make this transition a bellwether for European retailers eyeing cross‑border growth in 2024 market dynamics.
