US Natural Gas Set to Overtake Oil by 2030

For the first time in 75 years, petroleum may soon lose its title as the United States' top energy source. Natural gas is poised to surpass oil by 2030, driven by technological advancements and a surge in domestic production. The Institute for Energy Research (IER) notes that technically recoverable natural gas reserves now stand at 4,032 trillion cubic feet, a 47% increase since 2011.

This production boom, fueled by hydraulic fracturing and precision drilling, has propelled the U.S. to become the world's leading producer of both oil and natural gas. IER attributes this success partly to the U.S. system of private property rights, which allows market forces to guide production decisions more effectively than government control.

Canada is also experiencing a similar energy renaissance, with its natural gas reserves increasing by 80% since 2011. In contrast, Mexico's reserves have declined significantly, a situation IER links to government policies that restored a near-monopoly for Pemex. The U.S. energy revolution demonstrates the power of innovation and access to resources.

The U.S. possesses enough affordable, reliable energy for generations, provided access to these resources remains unhindered by excessive government intervention. This shift underscores a significant transformation in the nation's energy profile.
