Under pressure from investigators and regulators, billionaire Mark Walter is racing to unwind bets and save his sports-and-finance empire. In 2012 he stunned the sports world with a deal to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers, funded through loans from insurance companies he controls, leaving rivals puzzled.

Since then Walter expanded his holdings, acquiring stakes in the WNBA’s L.A. Sparks, England’s Chelsea FC, a Formula One team, and financing the Professional Women’s Hockey League. He also added trophy properties such as David Geffen’s $85 million Malibu beach house and partnered with Magic Johnson and Mubadala Capital. In June 2025 he sealed a record $10 billion purchase of the Los Angeles Lakers in just 72 hours.

The turning point came three months later when federal agents executed a search warrant at Chicago Midway International Airport, seizing Walter’s devices and those of his employees. Authorities are probing whether Walter’s businesses committed fraud by concealing financial connections between his insurance lenders and recipient companies.

The government’s inquiry centers on entities that acted as intermediaries between the Walter‑controlled insurers and the Walter‑controlled businesses, aiming to determine if the network was used to hide illicit activity. The probe threatens the stability of his sprawling sports empire and could reshape the intersection of sports ownership and Wall Street finance.
