Ukraine launches drone strikes on key Russian refineries

Ukraine said overnight drones struck two major Russian fuel facilities and a pumping station, tightening pressure on Russia's already struggling refinery output, which fell to multi‑year lows in April. The attacks hit a Yaroslavl refinery 282 km northeast of Moscow and the Permnefteorgsintez complex in the Urals, according to President Zelenskiy. The strike marks the first confirmed hit on both facilities within 48 hours.

Kyiv’s security service SBU confirmed the strikes were carried out by long‑range drones launched from undisclosed sites, echoing a pattern of escalating aerial raids since the spring. By targeting processing capacity in both European and Siberian corridors, Ukraine aims to curtail Russia’s ability to meet domestic demand and to limit fuel supplies to European markets that rely on Russian exports. Regional fuel costs may rise.

Energy traders have already priced the news into crude spreads, with European diesel futures edging higher as analysts reassess supply tightness. The incidents also raise questions about the resilience of Russia’s aging refinery network, which may face further disruptions if Kyiv sustains its drone campaign. Overall, Russia's export quota could be trimmed this quarter.
