Tsingshan Plans to Triple Zimbabwe Steel Output

Tsingshan Holding Group Co. is evaluating a plan to increase production at its Manhizhe steel plant in Zimbabwe from 600,000 to as much as 2 million tons annually. The facility, located 205 kilometers southeast of Harare, began operations in 2024 and currently exports much of its output to South Africa. The proposed expansion could intensify pressure on South Africa’s struggling steel industry, which is already facing domestic supply challenges. Benson Xu, CEO of Tsingshan’s Zimbabwean unit, confirmed the potential tripling of output, signaling a strategic move to capture market share in the region.

The expansion reflects broader trends in African steel production, where Chinese investors are increasingly looking to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on traditional exporters. While the move promises economic benefits for Zimbabwe, including job creation and foreign investment, it also raises concerns about regional market dynamics and the impact on existing steel producers in neighboring countries.

Industry analysts note that the decision comes amid fluctuating global steel prices and growing demand across Africa. If realized, the increased capacity could reshape trade flows in Southern Africa, potentially altering the competitive landscape for South African steelmakers and prompting them to adapt their strategies to remain competitive.
