Thai authorities seized 100,000 counterfeit items worth nearly $1 million during a raid at Bangkok's MBK Center, a notorious hub for intellectual property violations. The operation followed the mall's inclusion in the US Trade Representative's 2025 list of markets notorious for counterfeiting, which highlights Thailand's struggle to curb trademark infringements.

Photos revealed counterfeit bags, shoes, and clothing mimicking brands like Nike, crammed into boxes and trash bags. Commerce officials emphasized the raid's importance for Thailand's tourism sector, which contributes 12% to GDP. With 2025 visitor targets at risk due to geopolitical tensions, authorities aim to restore Bangkok's reputation as a safe shopping destination.

The mall will terminate leases with offending tenants and intensify oversight of merchandise sales, according to Intellectual Property Director-General Auramon Supthaweethum. This enforcement aligns with Thailand's efforts to strengthen trade relations with the US, its top export market, amid ongoing negotiations over tariff reductions.

The crackdown reflects broader global pressure on developing economies to combat counterfeiting. Analysts warn that persistent violations could trigger retaliatory measures from international partners, affecting Thailand's $1.5 trillion annual trade volume.
