Taiwan's government has launched an international organization for the first time, highlighting its efforts to push back at China's growing campaign to isolate it on the global stage. President Lai Ching-te announced the formation of the World Alliance for Disaster Management at a resilience forum on Saturday, where he said the new platform would promote joint training and exercises, mutual assistance and information sharing.

Taiwan has extensive experience in responding to disasters, including typhoons and earthquakes, and holds resilience exercises to prepare for threats from China. The initiative marks a significant diplomatic step as Taiwan seeks to expand its international presence despite pressure from Beijing.

The alliance aims to leverage Taiwan's disaster response expertise to build global partnerships. This move comes as China continues to squeeze Taiwan's diplomatic space, blocking its participation in organizations like the World Health Organization and pressuring allies to cut ties.
