Rheinmetall AG, Germany's largest defence firm, clinched a contract to supply Romania with €5.7 billion worth of military equipment. The deal marks the company's biggest international package since the war in Ukraine began, reinforcing NATO's eastern flank. Investors see the win as a boost to Rheinmetall's order backlog and revenue visibility.

The agreement covers systems from armored vehicles to artillery and air‑defence solutions. By channeling German defence technology into Bucharest's procurement plans, the contract deepens Berlin’s strategic ties with a key NATO member bordering Russia. The procurement also secures long‑term maintenance contracts for German suppliers, adding a sizeable foreign‑currency inflow to Rheinmetall's balance sheet.

Analysts note that the €5.7 billion figure dwarfs Rheinmetall's recent European orders and could lift its 2024 earnings guidance. The deal arrives as NATO members scramble to modernise forces facing heightened threat perceptions in Eastern Europe. Rheinmetall will report a revenue stream tied to a partner, strengthening its market position. With this contract, Rheinmetall strengthens its foothold in the Balkans, a region seeing increased defence spending.
