Orsted Stake Sale Pressure Mounts in Denmark

Denmark's Orsted A/S faces renewed political pressure as four right-wing parties push for the government to sell its 50.1% stake following the March 24 election. The Liberal Party, part of the current coalition, won't oppose the plan, potentially giving the proposal majority support in parliament. This comes after Denmark recently participated in a 60-billion krone ($9.4 billion) rescue package for the wind energy company.

The government's involvement in Orsted has long been controversial. In 2014, a finance ministry sale of shares to Goldman Sachs Group Inc sparked massive protests and caused the coalition government to collapse when the Socialist People's Party walked out in protest. More recently, in 2019, the opposition blocked Orsted's planned $4 billion power distribution asset sale just before elections, surprising management and hurting the stock price.

Current polls suggest a left-wing government is more likely to emerge from the election, which would oppose selling Orsted. However, the five right-wing parties together could secure 74 of parliament's 179 seats, potentially enough to force through an exit plan if they gain additional support. The timing is particularly sensitive given Orsted's recent financial struggles and the government's substantial investment in the company's recent rights issue.
