Novo Nordisk will invest €432 million ($507 million) to upgrade its Irish factory for producing the Wegovy weight-loss pill outside the US, the Irish Times reported. The Danish pharmaceutical giant confirmed the facility expansion in Athlone will increase capacity for current and future obesity and diabetes medicines. This move comes as Novo faces increasing competition in the lucrative weight-loss market.

The investment underscores Novo's strategy to maintain dominance after its stock recently declined following disappointing results for next-generation drug CagriSema. Rival Eli Lilly's Zepbound outperformed Novo's product in recent trials, while Lilly separately announced an $800 million expansion of its own Irish manufacturing facility in Cork. Novo had previously abandoned plans for a Dublin factory and cut Athlone jobs last year.
