Waldemar Szlezak, global head of digital infrastructure at KKR & Co., has emerged as a key figure in the firm's data center expansion following a major partnership with Nvidia Corp. At 49, Szlezak reports to Brandon Freiman, who leads KKR's infrastructure business in North America. Since joining KKR in 2019, his profile has grown alongside the AI boom. Previously at Soros Fund Management, he focused on communications infrastructure and real estate investments. An engineer with a mathematics degree, Szlezak is known for his infrastructure newsletter read by KKR executives. He played a crucial role in KKR's $15 billion acquisition of Cyrus One in 2022, securing a $3 billion equity contribution from Global Infrastructure Partners. Szlezak also spearheaded Helix Digital Infrastructure, launched in June with over $10 billion in funding, backed by Nvidia and the Kuwait Investment Authority.

The Nvidia partnership involves a $500 billion pact to finance AI chips, with Nvidia guaranteeing 25% of residual chip value. This follows a model used by Broadcom and others. KKR's infrastructure business, now managing $120 billion, was founded post-2008 crisis and has grown significantly under Raj Agrawal's leadership. Concerns exist about industry overbuild and technology obsolescence, but KKR focuses on counterparty creditworthiness. The firm owns six global data centers and is considering an IPO for Cyrus One.

In a November report, Szlezak noted AI market froth alongside genuine breakthroughs, predicting a shake-out but no US data center overbuilding. As AI investments intensify, KKR must manage risks from fluctuating asset values while maintaining infrastructure returns.
